Angels star Mike Trout signing autographs before a game.

So you want an autograph of your favorite Major League Baseball player? There are many ways to get autographs in todays times, and believe it or not many times you can score your favorite players signature for little or no cost. Collecting autographs is fun hobby that gets you as close to the game as possible. I use many of these methods personally to collect autographs with my son, which is great bonding time for us as a family.

Getting started in autograph collecting, there are a few things to keep in mind. No autograph is guarunteed unless you pay for it at a signing. No player owes you an autograph, although many are willing to give you one if you are respectful about it. The second thing to keep in mind is it can get costly quick if you dont pay attention. Balls, bats, jerseys, pens, markers, and cases cases....they all add up!! Cards and photos generally are cheaper and better options for a lesser known player, while a jersey, bat, or custom art piece would be more unique and valuable signed by the right person. The final tip is be persistant. You can not attempt to get autographs one time and make an opinion on the hobby. I have had days where I have walked away with none and days I have walked away with 30.

The first option to get autographs is at a paid signing. There are many resources online to find on when and where your favorite celebrity will be doing their signing. Although there are free signings on occasion, most sit down signing require a pretty hefty fee. An upcoming Derek Jeter signing is $800 for a picture and an autographed baseball. A premium item would run you another $300 or so. Many athletes do not sign outside of private signings making this pretty much the only option, while some just simply give you a better version of their autograph in this environment.

The ballpark is my personal favorite autograph collecting experience. The first tip at the ballpark is get there early and wait by the players enterance. This is the same location to wait for autographs after the game as well. Inside the stadium, you generally want to be near the dugout, although you can have success near the bullpen, as well as down the outfield line after stretches. Being polite, having your item ready, and being in the right spot will determine your success. Try to find out players signing habits so you can put yourself in the best position.

My second favorite method is through the mail, or TTM. Through the years stars such as Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bryce Harper, and Clayton Kershaw have obliged my autograph request TTM. Thats right, for the cost of a stamped envelope, and a self addressed stamped envelope, you can score autographs from you favorite baseball players. One of the most important tips to remember when requesting autographs TTM, is to make sure you send items that you would be okay losing. Not all mail request come back. Some come back answered, some returned unsigned, and some returned to sender. There are many resources online to find out which players sign and which ones do not, as well as which players require a fee.

There are a few methods that I am personally not fond of. With that being said, some of the best successes I have ever seen have been at these places. Look, I love collecting autographs more than anyone, yet at the same time I think at some point you are intruding on privacy. So here it is..Airports and hotels can be tricky, but some of the best autograph collectors I have seen score big at these spots, mostly in part to smaller crowds and trying to avoid a crowd.

Baseball season is right around the corner, and collecting autographs is one of my favorite parts of the ballpark. Here are a few final thoughts. Collect smart!! Don't ruin items by using the wrong pens, Get the prospects in the minor leagues while they are willing to sign for free. Catch the big league players at minor league stadiums on rehab assignments. Getting the right items and being in the right spot can bring you face to face with your favorite MLB stars. There will be good days and bad days, but I assure you some cool stories and hours of fun.
